India’s renewable energy sector has made significant strides, with the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) reporting impressive growth between December 2023 and December 2024. This progress underscores India’s commitment to its clean energy goals and its broader strategy under the ‘Panchamrit’ targets announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Renewable Energy Capacity Reaches 209.44 GW
By December 2024, India’s renewable energy installed capacity reached a record 209.44 GW, a 15.84% increase from 180.80 GW in December 2023. A substantial 28.64 GW of new capacity was added during the year, marking a remarkable 119.46% jump from the 13.05 GW added in 2023.
Surge in Solar and Wind Energy
Solar power led the growth, with an addition of 24.54 GW in 2024. This represents a 33.47% rise in cumulative installed capacity, which reached 97.86 GW compared to 73.32 GW in the previous year. Wind energy also made a strong contribution, adding 3.42 GW to bring the total capacity to 48.16 GW, a 7.64% increase from 2023.
Bioenergy and Small Hydro Power Growth
Bioenergy witnessed a notable increase, with installed capacity rising from 10.84 GW in December 2023 to 11.35 GW in December 2024, reflecting a growth of 4.70%. Small hydro power projects also saw gradual progress, growing by 2.20% from 4.99 GW in 2023 to 5.10 GW in 2024.
Commitment to Clean Energy and Energy Security
Under the leadership of Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi, the MNRE has been actively working towards fulfilling India’s ambitious renewable energy targets. These initiatives align with Prime Minister Modi’s goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, reinforcing India’s commitment to climate action and enhancing energy security.
This impressive growth highlights the Government of India’s ongoing efforts to scale up its renewable energy capacity, strengthening its position in the global clean energy transition.
