Indian Army formally introduces biodiesel into its fuel supply chain

In a major move to advance clean energy adoption and bolster the Centre’s green agenda, the Indian Army has officially incorporated biodiesel into its fuel network.

The initiative was inaugurated at a ceremony in New Delhi, where the first batch of biodiesel was received by Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh, Vice Chief of the Army Staff. Senior officials—including the Quarter Master General, the Director General of Supply and Transport, and BPCL’s Director (Marketing) Shubhankar Sen—were also present. The launch coincided with the 265th Corps Day of the Army Service Corps, adding symbolic significance to the event.

By integrating biodiesel, the Army has embarked on a pivotal shift toward cleaner fuel options designed to cut carbon emissions and strengthen its long-term energy security. This step closely follows the Armed Forces’ adoption of E-20 petrol on 1 December 2025, further reinforcing their commitment to sustainable mobility.

During the event, the Vice Chief expressed appreciation for BPCL’s partnership, noting that the Army and the corporation share a common objective of fostering an eco-conscious and energy-efficient future. He highlighted that considering the Army’s vast mobility needs, transitioning to greener fuels will play a crucial role in advancing India’s broader clean energy mission.

The initiative is yet another demonstration of the Army’s proactive role in national development, showcasing its dedication to environmental responsibility, forward-looking innovation, and prudent resource management.

Sharing the update on X, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information wrote: “In a significant step towards clean energy, the Indian Army has formally inducted Bio-Diesel into its fuel supply chain. The first consignment was flagged in by Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, VCOAS, in New Delhi, marking a decisive shift towards eco-friendly fuel solutions that reduce carbon emissions and strengthen long-term energy resilience.”

The post further noted that the Army’s shift to sustainable fuels will greatly enhance both its operational capabilities and its environmental commitments.
