“India-Myanmar energy cooperation would be more intense in future”: Indian envoy Abhay Thakur

India and Myanmar are set to enhance their energy cooperation with several important initiatives in progress. Abhay Thakur, India’s Ambassador to Myanmar, highlighted that there are numerous reasons for strengthening the energy partnership between the two countries.

In an interview with ANI on Friday, he stated, “There are many reasons why the energy cooperation between India and Myanmar will intensify in the future… A coastal shipping agreement, currently under discussion, will make energy cooperation, particularly in gasoline and diesel supplies, highly beneficial for Myanmar.”

Besides the coastal shipping agreement, Ambassador Thakur also pointed out India’s efforts to increase trade using the rupee settlement system and stressed the significance of collaboration in the solar energy sector. “We are actively working to expand the volume of trade settled in rupees. We also have cooperation, especially in the solar energy sector, under the Joint Working Groups (JWGs) on Power. All these efforts combined hold great potential to enhance India-Myanmar energy cooperation,” he said.

Ambassador Thakur also underscored India’s prompt response to Myanmar following the devastating earthquake that struck the country on March 28. India was one of the first nations to offer aid within 24 hours of the disaster, which claimed over 3,000 lives.

“We were the first to respond, offering help to Myanmar within 24 hours of the tragedy,” Ambassador Thakur remarked. “Our assistance included over 1,000 tonnes of various humanitarian relief materials, such as generators, kitchen sets, ready-to-eat meals, rice, and cooking oil. We also set up a field hospital for medical care. This wide-ranging response has been recognized by both the government and the people of Myanmar.”

The Quad nations—India, the US, Australia, and Japan—have come together to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar, contributing over USD 20 million in support.

“A combined contribution of over USD 20 million has been pledged by the Quad partners for humanitarian relief. Through our financial and bilateral efforts, we are delivering aid, deploying emergency medical teams, and supporting humanitarian organizations working in Myanmar to help those affected by the earthquake,” said a joint statement from the Quad.

The statement also expressed deep condolences for the tremendous loss of life and the extensive destruction of infrastructure, which has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.
