India: EV charging infrastructure see four times growth in 2 years

India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem has seen a major boost with a sharp rise in public charging stations. According to a new report by Tata Motors, the number of public chargers has grown nearly four times in just two years, from 5,500 in 2023 to more than 23,000 by mid-2025, according to The Financial Express.

This expansion, adding 18,000 chargers in only 15 months—was made possible through efforts by the central and state governments, carmakers, and private operators. The report notes that 91% of national highways now have a fast charger within 50 km. In states and union territories such as Karnataka, Delhi, Kerala, Punjab, Goa, Chandigarh, and Tripura, every highway stretch is covered. Around a quarter of all chargers are already being used enough to turn a profit.

The stronger charging network is also changing how people use their EVs. The report says that as of July 2025, 35% of Tata EV owners use a fast charger at least once a month, compared to 21% in 2023. In the past two years, 77% of customers have taken trips that needed a public charger, with half of them driving more than 500 km.

Nearly 14,000 Tata EV owners now depend mainly on public charging. “This shows that more drivers are willing to trust EVs for everyday and long-distance use,” the report states.

The growth in infrastructure has also fueled sales. At least one EV has been registered in 65% of India’s pin codes. The report highlights that 84% of Tata EV users now consider their EV as their primary vehicle, up from 74% two years ago.

With lower running costs, EV owners are using their cars more often—driving an average of 27 days a month, which is 35% higher than petrol and diesel car owners. EVs now run about 1,600 km per month, 40% more than internal combustion engine vehicles. The report adds that EVs cover 95% of India’s road network today.

The report also warns of gaps. As of early 2024, nearly 12,000 public chargers were found to be non-functional. A Tata Motors survey found that 38% of EV users still face issues with unreliable chargers, while 36% said speed of charging is their biggest concern.

“Fast charging is no longer optional—it’s the key to making EVs practical for all drivers,” the report concluded, adding that even a single faulty charger on highways can lead to hours of delay or leave drivers stranded.
