India-EU Energy Panel holds 10th meeting in Brussels, focuses on energy transition

The 10th meeting of the India-EU Energy Panel was held in Brussels, focusing on the energy transition priorities of both parties and reviewing the progress made in the second phase of the India-EU Clean Energy and Climate Partnership (2021-2024). The meeting, held on November 21, was co-chaired by Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs, and Ms. Ditte Juul Jorgensen, Director-General for Energy at the European Commission.

Representatives from India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Ministry of Power participated in the meeting, while the European Union was represented by the Directorate General for Energy and the Directorate General for Climate Action of the European Commission.

During the session, both sides reviewed and completed joint initiatives covering 51 activities across nine sectors under technical cooperation. A key focus was the framework for green hydrogen cooperation, which includes aligning policies between India and the EU. In this context, the EU and its member states participated in the International Conference on Green Hydrogen 2024 in India, and India was announced as an exclusive country partner for the European Hydrogen Week 2024.

India and the EU also committed to long-term research collaboration on clean energy projects through the India-EU Trade and Technology Council Working Group on Clean and Green Technologies, launched in January 2023. The meeting further resulted in the adoption of the Work Plan for the third phase of the India-EU Clean Energy and Climate Partnership (2025-2028), which will concentrate on advancing cooperation in five key areas: green hydrogen, offshore wind, regional connectivity, electricity market integration and smart grids, energy efficiency, and energy and climate diplomacy.

A significant part of the agenda was dedicated to green hydrogen cooperation, which will focus on infrastructure development, regulatory and technological collaboration, and strengthening supply chains. The panel also welcomed the participation of the EU and EU member states in the International Solar Alliance, reaffirming their shared commitment to global clean energy initiatives.

Both India and the EU reiterated their commitment to working together within the framework of the International Energy Agency and pledged to collaborate more closely on clean energy issues under the G20 platform.
