India emerges as key market for LNG, ranks fourth globally in 2024: TotalEnergies CEO

India is fast emerging as a significant player in the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market and ranked fourth globally in 2024, according to Patrick Pouyanne, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. He shared these insights during an exclusive conversation with ANI in Paris, France.

Pouyanne emphasized TotalEnergies’ deepening footprint in India, noting that the company has invested close to USD 5 billion in the country over the past five years. These investments cover a wide spectrum—from natural gas and its import infrastructure to city gas distribution and renewable energy projects.

“India is becoming an important market for LNG, number four in the world in 2024. For us, developing gas and finding long-term customers in India is a strong opportunity,” he said.

The French energy major’s projects in India include the development of gas infrastructure and significant investments in solar and wind energy. “We’ve put close to USD 5 billion into India over the last five years, particularly in gas, importing energy, city gas networks, and renewables. We are very active in solar and wind,” Pouyanne added.

When asked about progress on the memorandum of understanding signed with Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) during India Energy Week, Pouyanne noted that it was moving ahead positively. “We’ve already signed several energy supply contracts over the past year. GSPC is one, IOCL is another. These are 10-year contracts,” he said.

He also confirmed that the MoU is on track to evolve into a full Sales and Purchase Framework (SPF), which would further strengthen TotalEnergies’ LNG supply chain in India.

Pouyanne spoke about his meeting with India’s Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in Paris, during which the two discussed TotalEnergies’ current investments and future plans in India. “Mr. Goyal encouraged us to expand further. We discussed what we’ve done so far and what we hope to achieve,” he said.

The meeting was part of Minister Goyal’s official visit to France and Italy from June 1 to 5. During the trip, he is also expected to meet French Economy Minister Eric Lombard and Trade Minister Laurent Saint-Martin.

These developments underscore India’s growing importance in the global energy landscape and its expanding collaboration with international energy firms like TotalEnergies.
