India achieves 50% renewable energy target 5 years ahead of deadline

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, on Tuesday lauded India’s early achievement of a major renewable energy target, announcing that the country has reached 50% of its total installed energy capacity from renewable sources—well ahead of the 2030 deadline.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to IIT Bombay, Joshi said, “We have achieved 50 per cent of our total installed energy capacity through renewable energy. This milestone was expected by 2030, but we’ve accomplished it already.”

The minister credited the accomplishment to the leadership and long-term vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “India is setting an example for the world in renewable energy. Under PM Modi’s leadership, the country is leading globally in clean energy efforts,” he said.

Praising IIT Bombay’s role in driving energy research and innovation, Joshi emphasized the government’s strong commitment to investing in research and development to address energy challenges. “The government is allocating substantial funding for research to improve productivity and ensure grid stability. This is a key focus area for the Prime Minister, and we are working to deliver on that,” he stated.

Highlighting the purpose of his visit, the minister said, “I came to IIT Bombay because the institution has done commendable work in energy research. I congratulate the entire team. I’m pleased to see that the funds allocated have been effectively used for R&D.”

He also recalled Prime Minister Modi’s earlier commitment to achieving 50% renewable energy capacity by 2030. “That promise has now been fulfilled ahead of schedule, and we are progressing at a pace well beyond initial expectations,” he added.

Joshi was in Mumbai as the Chief Guest at the IVCA Renewable Energy Summit 2025, organized by the Indian Venture and Alternate Capital Association (IVCA). During the event, he delivered the keynote address, further underscoring the government’s commitment to accelerating India’s renewable energy transition.
