The United States and IIT Madras Research Park are set to announce a partnership soon, focusing on four key areas: solar energy, green hydrogen, electric vehicles and batteries, and green buildings, according to Chris Hodges, the Consul General of the United States in Chennai, speaking to BusinessLine on Thursday, reported The Hindu.
The goal of the partnership is to unite researchers, academia, and industry professionals from both the US and India to develop an ecosystem in these four domains. The formal announcement of the partnership is expected within a month.
As per media report, under this partnership, working groups will be established for each area. These groups will include members from both the US government and the Research Park.
Hodges highlighted the presence of US companies such as First Solar, which recently opened a plant in Chennai, and Ohmium, an American electrolyser manufacturer planning a ₹400 crore investment in Tamil Nadu. He described these companies as “great ambassadors” in their respective fields.
When asked about the US government’s role, Hodges stated, “We are a convenor, focused on bringing together the right elements.” He emphasized that while many positive developments are occurring in these fields, the challenge lies in connecting them effectively. The working groups will address this challenge in their respective areas.
