India: Himachal CM reiterates commitment of ‘Green Energy State’

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu flagged off 24 advanced Volvo buses from Kyari Ghat in Solan, reinforcing the state government’s vision of developing Himachal Pradesh into a ‘Green Energy State’ and delivering modern, efficient transport services to the public.

Addressing a large gathering at the flag-off event on Wednesday evening, CM Sukhu reiterated the state’s determination to enhance public transport infrastructure. He highlighted that the government has significantly invested in upgrading the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), allocating ₹1,000 crore annually over the past two years to ensure safe, convenient, and reliable travel for residents and tourists alike.

The Chief Minister informed the public that the government has already procured 500 diesel buses, 300 electric buses, and nearly 30 high-end Volvo coaches to modernize the fleet. Additionally, there are plans to introduce 100 Tempo Travellers to further improve connectivity, particularly in remote and rural regions. At present, HRTC receives a monthly subsidy of ₹60 crore to sustain and expand its services.

Acknowledging the geographical limitations in terms of rail and air connectivity, CM Sukhu emphasized that roadways remain the primary means of transportation in Himachal. He assured continued efforts to upgrade HRTC’s services to meet growing demand while maintaining commuter comfort.

He further outlined the state’s green energy roadmap, which includes the promotion of hydrogen-powered electric buses and the development of more EV charging stations. An investment of ₹110 crore is being made to set up a widespread EV charging infrastructure across the state, he said, moving closer to realizing the dream of a sustainable, energy-efficient Himachal Pradesh.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri also addressed the gathering, marking the 50-year journey of HRTC as a vital public transport provider. He noted that HRTC buses transport around 4 to 5 lakh passengers daily and have extended their reach even to the remotest areas, including operations on the long-haul Delhi-Leh route.

Agnihotri added that 250 diesel buses have been deployed over the past two years, with plans underway to introduce another 250 soon. He also shared that employees of the transport corporation have been granted multiple benefits, including implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) and disbursement of pending allowances. Furthermore, new bus terminals are being built across the state based on regional needs.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Col. Dhani Ram Shandil praised the Chief Minister’s initiatives, stating that the launch of Volvo buses would not only enhance public convenience but also boost state revenue.

The event was attended by several prominent officials and dignitaries, including Deputy Speaker Vinay Kumar, Jogindera Cooperative Bank President Mukesh Sharma, HRTC Vice Chairman Ajay Verma, HP Youth Congress President Chattar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Transport and Industries) RD Nazim, HRTC MD Nipun Jindal, YS Parmar University VC Rajeshwar Chandel, Deputy Commissioner Manmohan Sharma, and SP Gaurav Singh.
