Guyana’s Prime Minister Brigadier (Retd) Mark Phillips arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday to participate in the World Sustainable Development Summit 2025. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, the visit will further strengthen the “strong and growing multifaceted relationship” between India and Guyana.
Jaiswal took to social media, welcoming Prime Minister Phillips and noting, “Warm welcome to PM Brig (Retd) Mark Phillips of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, as he arrives to attend the World Sustainable Development Summit 2025. This visit will add further momentum to the strong & growing India-Guyana multifaceted relationship, including in the areas of sustainable development & renewable energy.”
The World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS), scheduled from March 5 to 7, will focus on the theme “Partnerships for Accelerating Sustainable Development and Climate Solutions.” The annual event is organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), bringing together stakeholders from various sectors to discuss global sustainability issues.
Earlier in February, Guyana’s Health Minister Frank Anthony expressed deep appreciation for India’s timely support during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for the vaccines that played a vital role in saving lives in Guyana. Speaking to ANI, Anthony highlighted how India did not withhold vaccines, even when it was facing its own struggles with COVID-19.
Anthony remarked, “During COVID, the vaccines we received from India helped save many lives. At a time when we were searching worldwide for vaccines, it was difficult to find anyone willing to sell them. India stepped up and became the first country to provide us with vaccines, which were crucial for protecting our frontline healthcare workers. We are extremely grateful for this gesture, especially knowing that India itself was going through its own difficulties.”
He also praised India’s healthcare system, noting that Guyana is inspired by India’s work in the health sector. “India has set an example in healthcare, offering a full spectrum of services—from wellness to the most sophisticated care for the sick. We hope to emulate some of this in our own country,” Anthony said.
Additionally, Anthony shared his country’s appreciation for the visits of Indian leaders. Guyana was honored to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in 2024 and 2023, respectively. He emphasized that their visits significantly strengthened the bilateral relationship. “During Prime Minister Modi’s visit, several agreements were signed, including two related to health, one of which Guyana has officially recognized,” Anthony added.
