Gujarat government approved land for green hydrogen hub: Governor

Ahmedabad: In a significant move toward establishing Gujarat as a national hub for green hydrogen, the state government has granted “in-principle” approval for the allocation of nearly 1.99 lakh hectares of land to develop a renewable energy park dedicated to green hydrogen production, reported The Hindu businessline.

The announcement was made by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat during his address on the first day of the month-long budget session of the Gujarat legislative assembly on Wednesday.

“Gujarat is poised to become the national hub for green hydrogen, leveraging its vast renewable energy potential, strong port infrastructure, and well-developed LNG pipeline network. To achieve this, the Government of Gujarat has set an ambitious target of producing 30 lakh metric tons of green hydrogen annually,” the Governor stated.

The state government has introduced a new policy for leasing unused government land to support green hydrogen production using renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and wind-solar hybrid systems. This initiative follows the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth over ₹3 lakh crore in the green hydrogen sector during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2024.

Governor Devvrat emphasised that generating approximately 100 GW of power from renewable energy sources will be essential to meet the green hydrogen production goals. “The Government of Gujarat has approved, in principle, the allocation of nearly 1.99 lakh hectares of land to establish a renewable energy park for green hydrogen production,” he told the legislators.

To support this initiative, the state plans to enhance the capacity of the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) and the Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation (GETCO) network. Gujarat currently leads the nation in installed electricity generation capacity, with a total of 57,664 MW. Of this, 31,483 MW comes from renewable energy sources, including 12,474 MW from wind energy and 16,796 MW from solar energy projects.

The Governor also revealed that renewable energy parks with an additional capacity of about 37,000 MW are under development in the state. These efforts underscore Gujarat’s commitment to becoming a leader in green hydrogen production and renewable energy, aligning with India’s broader goals of sustainable development and energy transition.
