Greenergy has temporarily halted operations at its biodiesel facility in Immingham, located in north-east England. The decision comes as the company begins a strategic review to determine whether the plant remains financially viable, given the ongoing difficulties facing the UK’s biofuels sector, reports Biofuels International.
The company noted that despite efforts to cut costs at the site, current market conditions have not improved enough to support continued operations.
“All employees at the Immingham plant will stay on during the review period,” a Greenergy spokesperson said. “We are maintaining close communication and support for our staff throughout this process.”
The European Waste-based and Advanced Biofuels Association (EWABA) responded to the news, saying the shutdown represents another serious setback for the UK’s renewable fuel industry.
“This move highlights the consequences of delays and missteps in government policy, which have left UK biofuel producers struggling to stay afloat,” an EWABA representative said. “Without swift action, the country could lose its entire capacity to produce renewable fuels at home.”
