Greenergy extends lease for Amsterdam biodiesel plant

Greenergy has extended its lease with the Port of Amsterdam for another 10 years, underscoring its long-term commitment to producing biofuels in the Netherlands, reports Biofuels International.

The company purchased the Amsterdam biodiesel plant in 2018 and has since invested heavily in upgrades. These include converting the facility to process waste oils and expanding its production capacity. The latest expansion, completed in 2024, boosted output by 25% and allowed the plant to handle a wider variety of waste oils to meet rising demand for renewable fuels.

These improvements come as the Netherlands increases its support for biofuels. The Dutch Government has outlined plans to raise the limits on how much biofuel can be blended with petrol and diesel over the next five years, ensuring steady demand for producers like Greenergy.

“Our renewed lease shows our commitment to continuing biodiesel production in the Netherlands, where there is strong policy support for renewable fuels,” said Adam Traeger, CEO of Greenergy. “The Dutch Government is taking clear steps to expand the use of biofuels, and with the investments we’ve made in our Amsterdam plant, we are ready to play a central role in cutting transport emissions across Europe.”

Port of Amsterdam CEO Koen Overtoom welcomed the agreement, saying, “We are pleased to extend our partnership with Greenergy. This step supports our shared goal of reducing carbon emissions and strengthens Amsterdam’s position as a hub for renewable fuels. We look forward to building on this collaboration in the years ahead.”
