The Green Science Alliance has taken another step toward its goal of replacing all petroleum- and fossil fuel-based chemical products with alternatives made from plants and natural materials. The company has now developed an eco-friendly glue made largely from plant-derived ingredients, reports Renewable Energy Magazine.
This new adhesive is a two-part epoxy resin glue with a plant biomass content of 30 to 50 percent. The company says it is working to increase that percentage in the future.
Despite being made from natural sources, the glue performs much like conventional petroleum-based epoxy glues. It can be used on a wide range of surfaces, including wood, ceramics, glass, metal, plastics, and films, and provides similar bonding strength.
Green Science Alliance has already created a variety of plant-based products, including biodegradable plastics and resins, natural coatings, paints, plasticizers, lubricants, 3D-printed furniture, and even nail cosmetics—all with minimal or no use of petroleum.
The company plans to make its new plant-based glue available for purchase through its online store.
