Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, presided over the signing of the first-ever agreement for exporting green ammonia from India to Japan. This project offtake agreement represents a major milestone in India’s ambition to become a global leader in green hydrogen and ammonia production.
The ceremony, which marked the Heads of Terms (HoT) for cross-border green ammonia supply, was attended by dignitaries including H.E. Mr. Simon Wong, High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore to India; Mr. Yuta Hikichi, First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan in India; Mr. Ajay Yadav, Joint Secretary at MNRE; and Mr. Vipul Tuli, Chairman – South Asia & CEO – Hydrogen Business at Sembcorp Industries. This agreement signifies the first collaboration of its kind involving India, Singapore, and Japan, highlighting India’s rising stature in the global green energy sector.
The HoT agreement was formalized between Sembcorp Industries, Sojitz Corporation, Kyushu Electric Power Co., and NYK Line, establishing a partnership for the cross-border supply of green ammonia from India to Japan. This marks a significant step in international cooperation in green energy.
Sembcorp Industries, based in Singapore, will spearhead the production of green ammonia in India using renewable energy sources. Kyushu Electric Power Co. will integrate this green ammonia into their energy portfolio, aiming to partially replace coal at their thermal power plants in Japan. Sojitz Corporation will serve as the business intermediary, connecting the ammonia producer with the offtaker, while NYK Line will manage the maritime transport of the green ammonia from India to Japan.
In his address, Shri Pralhad Joshi emphasized the historic nature of the agreement, stating, “Today marks a significant milestone with the signing of the first agreement for green ammonia export from India to Japan. This agreement will establish a strong supply chain from production in India to consumption in Japan, setting the stage for future green energy collaborations.”
The Minister underscored India’s swift advancements in green hydrogen and renewable energy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He reiterated the country’s commitment to becoming a global leader in these fields through strategic partnerships, robust regulatory frameworks, and significant investments.
Shri Pralhad Joshi also announced an active tender for 750,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green ammonia, with additional tenders for 450,000 TPA. These initiatives are part of India’s broader strategy to incentivize the production of over a million tonnes of green hydrogen annually, demonstrating the country’s capability and determination to rapidly scale up green energy production.
Additionally, the Minister highlighted the deep cultural and people-to-people connections between India, Japan, and Singapore, noting their collaborative efforts in energy efficiency and renewable technologies. He expressed confidence that this agreement is just the beginning of India’s expanding role in the green energy sector, with future projects expected to be even more ambitious.
This agreement not only strengthens India’s position as a key player in the global green energy market but also reflects the Indian Government’s unwavering support for green hydrogen and renewable energy initiatives. The partnership with Japan underscores India’s growing expertise and commitment to sustainable development and energy independence.
