Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation has earmarked several public spaces across the city for the installation of new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, responding to growing demand from residents, reported The Hindu.
The stations will be set up on government land at prominent locations, including the parking areas at Marina Beach and Besant Nagar Beach, Nageswara Rao Park in Mylapore, Bougainvillea Park in Anna Nagar, Semmozhi Poonga in Teynampet, the Corporation playground and Somasundaram Park in T. Nagar, Mangal Lake Park in Ambattur, and the Ashtalakshmi Temple parking area in Besant Nagar. The facilities will be installed by Relux Electric Private Limited in partnership with the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL).
All nine charging stations are expected to be operational before December 2025. Each site will cover roughly 500 sq. ft., with space to charge two cars and three two-wheelers simultaneously, and will include fast-charging options for four-wheelers.
The rollout marks the first phase of Tamil Nadu’s plan to install 500 EV charging stations statewide under the TNGECL–Relux Electric partnership. The chosen locations are intended to provide easy access for residents and support the city’s growing shift toward electric mobility.
A Chennai Corporation official said the initiative aims to expand sustainable and environmentally friendly transport options. “Through this collaboration with Relux Electric and TNGECL, we aim to ensure convenient access to reliable EV charging points across Chennai’s key public spaces. This effort reflects the Corporation’s ongoing commitment to building cleaner, energy-efficient urban infrastructure,” the official said.
