German State Secretary to visit India with business delegation, open Wind Energy Trade Fair

German Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Johann Saathoff, will visit India with a business delegation for a series of meetings and to inaugurate the country’s largest international wind energy trade fair, scheduled from October 29 to November 1 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

According to an official release from the German Embassy in India, the visit aims to deepen cooperation between Indian and German companies in the renewable energy sector and boost investment opportunities. With India pursuing ambitious renewable energy targets, it has become a key market for German firms looking to strengthen global partnerships.

“The Parliamentary State Secretary in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Mr. Saathoff, is traveling to India with a business delegation,” the statement confirmed.

Saathoff and the delegation will begin their engagements in Chennai on October 29, holding discussions with Indian companies and associations in the wind energy industry. On October 30, he will inaugurate this year’s Indian wind energy fair, joined by representatives from the Indian government and the business community.

The delegation will then travel to New Delhi on October 31 for further discussions with Indian companies, government officials, and associations from the solar and bioenergy sectors. The talks will also address key topics such as energy storage, skilled workforce development, and labour migration.

The release underscored that Germany remains a steadfast partner for India, particularly in supporting its goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. It noted that collaboration between German engineering expertise and Indian manufacturing strength is essential for building diversified and resilient global supply chains in renewable energy. This partnership, it added, also helps reduce unilateral dependencies while enhancing the competitiveness of both economies.

To promote such cooperation, the BMZ and India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) jointly launched the “India-Germany Platform for Investments in Renewable Energy Worldwide” during the RE Invest Conference in Gujarat in 2024. Under this initiative, four working groups have been established, focusing on solar energy, wind energy, battery storage, skilled workers, and research and development.

Government data shows that Germany is India’s 9th largest foreign direct investor, with cumulative FDI reaching USD 15.11 billion between April 2000 and March 2025. In FY 2024–25, German investments in India stood at USD 469 million (compared to USD 505 million in FY 2023–24 and USD 547 million in FY 2022–23).

According to the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, over 2,000 German companies are currently active in India, primarily investing in sectors such as transportation, electrical equipment, metallurgy, services, chemicals, construction, trading, and automobiles
