French green hydrogen firms expand abroad, targeting UK and beyond

French companies working in green hydrogen are stepping up their global plans, with the United Kingdom emerging as a major focus. Several large renewable hydrogen projects are moving forward in Britain with support from the government’s Hydrogen Allocation Rounds, reports Strategic Energy Europe.

One of the leading efforts is the Tees Green Hydrogen project, led by EDF and Hynamics. The project has secured backing in the first phase of the UK government’s program. Its initial stage includes a 7.5 MW electrolyser, with construction expected to start in 2025 and operations beginning in 2026. A second phase is also under consideration, which could expand production with an additional 100 MW of capacity.

Another French company, Lhyfe, has received approval to set up a new site in Wallsend, UK. The plan involves a 20 MW electrolyser that can produce about 8 tonnes of green hydrogen daily—nearly 3,000 tonnes a year. This project, together with another Lhyfe site in Kemsley, has been shortlisted in the UK government’s second round of hydrogen support, underlining the company’s long-term push to grow in international markets.

In another significant move, Hynamics and investment firm Hy24 have signed an agreement to develop the Fawley Green Hydrogen project. The project will involve building a 120 MW electrolyser to help cut emissions from ExxonMobil’s refinery. Talks are now underway for about £300 million (€350 million) in funding, making it one of the largest French-led hydrogen projects outside the country.

Beyond Europe, French technology is also making its way to Latin America. Pragma Industries has supplied a hydrogen refueling station for bicycles in Chile, working with local partner KH2 Green. The project marks an important step in the small but growing market for hydrogen-powered micro-mobility.

These projects highlight how French green hydrogen firms are moving faster on the international stage. By combining homegrown innovation with partnerships abroad, they aim to build new markets and expand renewable hydrogen solutions worldwide.
