Finland has officially inaugurated its first industrial-scale green hydrogen production plant, built by P2X Solutions Oy, in Harjavalta. The launch marks a significant step towards establishing a robust hydrogen economy in Finland, which is seen as crucial for reducing emissions across various industries and fostering economic growth, reports Hydrogen Central.
The inauguration, held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, was attended by President Alexander Stubb, who emphasized the plant’s importance in opening up Finland’s hydrogen economy. Green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as electric fuels, are expected to significantly reduce emissions in sectors like industrial manufacturing and land, sea, and air transportation. By replacing fossil fuels, these industries can achieve carbon neutrality goals and comply with upcoming fuel regulations.
The hydrogen economy is projected to bring substantial economic benefits to Finland, potentially creating over 115,000 new jobs and contributing up to 13% of the country’s GDP by the mid-2030s.
President Stubb stated, “Finland has everything it takes to become a clean energy superpower.” He highlighted the Harjavalta plant as a concrete example of sustainable growth through clean energy production. “Here in Harjavalta, you did not wait for change; you have made it happen,” he added.
Amédée Murisier, Chairman of P2X Solutions and a member of Alpiq’s Executive Board, emphasized P2X Solutions’ role as a Finnish hydrogen pioneer. “The inauguration of the green hydrogen production plant in Harjavalta is an important milestone in the further development of the European hydrogen market,” he said. Alpiq, a Swiss energy services provider and electricity producer with European operations, acquired a majority stake in P2X Solutions in April 2024.
The Harjavalta complex includes both the hydrogen production facility and a synthetic methane production (methanation) plant, which will become operational later. P2X Solutions also has plans for hydrogen plants in Joensuu and Oulu, aiming for production capacities of 40 MW and 100 MW, respectively.
Herkko Plit, Founder and CEO of P2X Solutions, expressed his vision for Finland’s clean energy future. “Finland is in a great position to become a superpower in clean hydrogen and its derivative fuels,” he said. He thanked his team and partners for their contribution to this “historical achievement.”
Plit urged companies to proactively adopt green hydrogen and electric fuels before mandatory regulations take effect. “Forerunners will gain a competitive advantage and secure the supply of emission-free energy in the 2030s,” he concluded.
