Expanding use of green hydrogen and ethanol will be crucial for China: Industry experts

According to political advisers and industry experts, the expansion of green hydrogen, ammonia, and ethanol usage will play a critical role in China’s efforts to significantly reduce carbon emissions while maintaining domestic energy security. They emphasize that as future growth in power generation shifts towards non-fossil resources, it is imperative for China to prioritize the development of sustainable green hydrogen, ethanol, and ammonia.

Jiang Yi, chairman of China Huadian Corp Ltd and a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, highlights China’s strategic importance as the world’s largest producer and consumer of hydrogen and ammonia. He stresses the need for comprehensive research into policy support, market mechanisms, and standard systems for these sectors to drive their commercial-scale development and application within the framework of “new energy+hydrogen/ethanol/ammonia-based energy”.

The process of producing hydrogen, ethanol, and ammonia from renewable energy sources and utilizing them as carriers for energy storage, which can later be converted back to electricity, is viewed as a crucial option for achieving deep decarbonization at the terminal end. These technologies are gaining increasing international attention due to their potential as emissions-free fuels.

Experts believe that green hydrogen, ethanol and ammonia could be a key to the success of the country’s carbon peak and neutrality goals, which aim to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
