European Commission imposes anti-dumping duties on Chinese biodiesel imports, safeguarding 6,000 EU jobs

The European Commission has placed anti-dumping duties on biodiesel imports from China to protect jobs and businesses in the European Union. The move is expected to safeguard around 6,000 jobs across more than 60 biodiesel producers in 18 member states, reports the European Commission.

The decision follows an investigation that found Chinese biodiesel was being sold in the EU at unfairly low prices, putting European producers at risk and threatening potential plant closures.

The tax rates, varying from 10% to 35.6%, are applied to pure biodiesel and blended fuels but not SAF. The just-introduced duties supersede the temporary duties of August 2024.

The renewable fuel of biodiesel, which is mainly utilised in the transport sector, is said to be supported by these measures by strengthening Europe’s energy security, as well as ensuring equitable competition for domestic manufacturers.

Background

The EU has already placed similar trade barriers on biodiesel imports from elsewhere. The EU’s biodiesel market is worth around €25 billion annually.
