At the Green Bharat Summit in New Delhi, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the growing importance of green fuel options like ethanol and methanol for India’s future transportation. He highlighted that flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), which can run on gasoline blended with ethanol, will become more prevalent in the coming years. Several automobile companies are planning to introduce these vehicles, contributing to the growth of green fossil fuel options in India. Gadkari also pointed out the increasing number of methanol trucks on Indian roads and shared that the government is working on a policy for the introduction of 15 percent methanol-blended diesel. Methanol, he noted, could significantly benefit trucks, reported Money Control.
Speaking on green fuels, he said, “Ethanol, methanol and other green fossil fuel flex vehicles will grow in India in the coming few years.”
Gadkari reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing pollution in the transport sector, noting that green hydrogen would play a pivotal role in addressing air quality challenges.
The Indian government has begun discussions to establish a roadmap for sustainable energy solutions beyond the 20 per cent ethanol blending target, indicating a forward-thinking strategy that anticipates future energy needs. To support this initiative, the government has sought suggestions from key industry bodies. Major industry bodies have also asked government to focus on FFVs.
