In September, ethanol blending in petrol reached 15.90%, while the cumulative ethanol blending from November 2023 to September 2024 was 13.80% in ESY 2023-24.
As of October 1, 2024, 16,756 public sector units (PSUs) out of a total of 83,190 are dispensing E20 ethanol-blended motor spirit.
Official data indicates that ethanol received by PSU oil marketing companies (OMCs) under the Ethanol Blending Program (EBP) in September 2024 amounted to 58.6 crore liters, contributing to a cumulative total of 585.2 crore liters from November 2023 to September 2024. In September 2024 alone, the volume of ethanol blended under the EBP was 62.4 crore liters, bringing the total to 607.4 crore liters for the same period.
The government aims to achieve a 20% ethanol blending target with petrol by 2025 and is optimistic about reaching this goal.
Recently, oil marketing companies issued tenders for the supply of 916 crore liters of denatured anhydrous ethanol for the Ethanol Supply Year (ESY) 2024-25. The response was robust, with manufacturers across the country submitting over 970 crore liters in offers.
India’s ethanol production capacity has significantly increased to 1,648 crore liters, and the government is confident that this expanding capacity will satisfy domestic needs. To meet the 20% blending target, approximately 1,016 crore liters of ethanol will be necessary, totaling around 1,350 crore liters when considering other uses. By 2025, an estimated production capacity of about 1,700 crore liters will be required, assuming that plants operate at 80% efficiency.
