Egypt green hydrogen project begins export to Europe, US

A 100-MW green hydrogen project in Egypt has entered partial operation and has commenced exports to Europe and the United States, as the country accelerates efforts to establish itself as a regional hub for clean fuels, reportes Renewables Now.

The project is being developed in the Ain Sokhna industrial zone within the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) by a consortium comprising Norwegian renewable energy developer Scatec, Egypt’s Sovereign Fund, Orascom Construction, and UAE-based Fertiglobe.

Egypt Green Hydrogen began partial production in 2023, when it successfully produced renewable ammonia at Fertiglobe’s facilities in Egypt using hydrogen from the project’s pilot electrolyzer. This enabled the world’s first internationally recognized ISCC PLUS–certified renewable ammonia shipment, delivered to Unilever for the production of near-zero-emissions synthetic soda ash in India.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the facility has begun partial production and is expected to ramp up operations in the coming period, enabling increased export volumes to European and other international markets. He added that the final investment decision (FID) for the full-scale project is anticipated in the coming months.

Madbouly reiterated the government’s support for the project during a meeting held at the New Administrative Capital, highlighting green hydrogen as a key pillar of Egypt’s broader renewable energy strategy.

Scatec Chief Executive Officer Terje Pilskog said the company highly values its partnership with the Egyptian government and remains committed to supplying green hydrogen to European markets. Officials from several European banks present at the meeting expressed interest in financing the project and backing Egypt’s ambition to become a centre for green hydrogen and green ammonia.

The Egypt Green Hydrogen Project includes a 20-year offtake agreement with Fertiglobe to supply its Ain Sokhna facility, from where green ammonia will be exported to Germany following Fertiglobe’s success in securing the first H2Global hydrogen tender.
