Drax Foundation gives £1.43 million globally to power STEM education, biodiversity and energy access

Drax has announced a new round of investment, supporting over 20 community projects in the areas where it operates.

Through the Drax Foundation, these contributions will benefit more than 20,000 children by improving access to STEM education, provide nature-based learning opportunities for over 24,000 individuals, and assist 400 households dealing with fuel poverty.

Shona King, Group Head of Social Impact at Drax, shared, “The Drax Foundation is dedicated to making a meaningful difference in communities, driving real and lasting impact. Whether it’s helping students in rural Canada explore climate science, supporting First Nations with biodiversity restoration, or offering energy advice to vulnerable households in the UK—our efforts are global in scope, yet deeply rooted in local communities.”

Some of the key projects receiving funding from the Drax Foundation include:

Engineering Development Trust (UK – North Yorkshire)
This UK charity works to connect young people with STEM opportunities and inspire future careers in the field, particularly among underrepresented groups. It has been awarded £41,846 to support its STEM Futures programme, which encourages interest in STEM careers through hands-on, extracurricular activities in schools near Selby, North Yorkshire.

Oban Mountain Rescue (UK – Scotland)
A voluntary organisation that provides vital search and rescue services in the mountainous and rural areas around Oban, Argyll, has received £30,000 to enhance its capabilities with a new command vehicle.

Project Learning Tree (U.S – U.S South)
A non-profit dedicated to promoting sustainability and environmental education in rural and low-income communities, has been granted £78,732 ($99,980 USD). The funding will support their ongoing programme that engages communities in STEM learning and green careers across the U.S South.

Williams Lake First Nation (Canada – British Columbia)
With a population of 1,000 members, this First Nation community in British Columbia has received £43,478 ($80,000 CAD) to continue its important work on the monitoring and restoration of the San Jose River’s aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This project has previously been supported by the Drax Foundation.
