Diu is a national example in Renewable Energy: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, hailed Diu as a national model for renewable energy adoption, noting that the district now meets its entire daytime electricity needs through solar power. During his visit to Diu, the Minister lauded the region’s significant achievement of becoming the first district in the country to fulfill its entire power requirement using solar energy, with an installed capacity of 11.88 MW—comprising 9 MW from ground-mounted systems and 2.88 MW from rooftop installations.

The Minister’s visit was aimed at reviewing the region’s progress in solar energy adoption and evaluating the implementation of the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. He chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials from the Union Territory’s administration to assess the current solar energy infrastructure, the energy supply framework, and plans for future expansion.

Energy Secretary of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, T. Arun, gave a comprehensive presentation detailing the existing solar power facilities, their generation capacity, and the tangible benefits being delivered at the household level. He shared that a growing number of families across the Union Territory are now benefitting from solar energy.

The meeting was attended by Diu Collector Dr. Vivek Kumar, Deputy Collector Shivam Mishra, Executive Engineer Yogesh Tripathi, Paresh Patel, and other senior officials.

Following the review, Minister Joshi visited key solar installations, including the 9 MW Solar Park in Fudam. The park, a cornerstone of Diu’s clean energy drive, plays a crucial role in meeting local electricity demand sustainably.

He noted that the Fudam solar park has not only helped reduce transmission and distribution losses but also enabled the local administration to revise power tariffs, resulting in more affordable electricity for consumers. Minister Joshi commended UT Administrator Praful Patel for his proactive leadership, which he said was instrumental in spearheading Diu’s clean energy transformation.

Reflecting on the broader impact, the Minister highlighted that the investments made over the last ten years in renewable energy infrastructure have already paid off through consistent power supply and solar energy sales. He emphasized the need to accelerate the rollout of the PM-Surya Ghar Yojana to achieve complete household-level adoption and ensure that all residents benefit from this shift to clean energy.

The visit underlined the Centre’s commitment to promoting renewable energy across the country, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a greener and more energy-secure India.
