DHL Global Forwarding and shipping major CMA CGM have agreed to jointly use 8,990 tonnes of second-generation biofuel to reduce emissions from ocean freight operations, reports Container News.
Under the initiative, the companies will use UCOME biofuel, which is expected to reduce around 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions on a well-to-wake basis. The emission cuts will apply to cargo moved under DHL’s GoGreen Plus service and mark an important step in the two companies’ efforts to lower the carbon footprint of shipping.
As part of the agreement, CMA CGM will supply the biofuel across its shipping fleet, while DHL will pass on the emission reductions to customers through its Book & Claim system. This model allows customers to reduce the carbon intensity of their supply chains without their cargo needing to be carried on a specific vessel using the biofuel.
