Deendayal Port Authority commissions India’s first Make-in-India 1 MW green hydrogen plant at Kandla

In a landmark move toward India’s clean energy ambitions, the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, has commissioned the country’s first Make-in-India 1 megawatt (MW) Green Hydrogen Plant. The facility was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, in the presence of Minister of State Shantanu Thakur, Secretary of the Ministry, T.K. Ramachandran, IAS, DPA Chairman Sushil Kumar Singh, IRSME, and senior officials from the Port and Larsen & Toubro (L&T).

This milestone marks a significant step in India’s green energy journey, underscoring the nation’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Reflecting on the Prime Minister’s foundation stone laying for a 10 MW Green Hydrogen Plant during his visit to Bhuj on 26th May 2025, Sonowal praised the swift execution of the first 1 MW module. Completed in just four months, this achievement sets a new benchmark for speed and efficiency in India’s green hydrogen sector.

“DPA has brought this vision to life, embodying the speed, scale, and skill envisioned in the Maritime India Vision 2030,” said Sonowal.

With this development, Deendayal Port Authority becomes the first port in India to operationalize a Make-in-India megawatt-scale Green Hydrogen plant. The facility is expected to produce approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, contributing significantly to maritime decarbonisation and sustainable port operations.

Minister of State Shantanu Thakur also hailed the achievement, calling it “a proud moment not just for Gujarat, but for the entire nation.” He emphasized that the project highlights India’s progress in clean energy, innovation, and self-reliance, and congratulated the team for taking a major step toward a sustainable maritime sector.

Sonowal also acknowledged DPA’s earlier green initiatives, including the deployment of India’s first Make-in-India all-electric Green Tug. He praised the development of a fully self-reliant, future-ready hydrogen ecosystem created entirely by Indian engineers, calling it a model for other ports to follow.

Commending both DPA’s leadership and L&T’s engineering execution, the Minister said: “I applaud the Deendayal Port Authority team, led by the Chairman, and appreciate the dedication of L&T’s engineers for delivering this complex project with impressive speed and precision.”

As India advances toward a greener maritime future, Deendayal Port Authority remains at the forefront, driving innovation and transformation in alignment with national goals and global sustainability standards.
