Gillette: Wyoming-based energy transition company Cowboy Clean Fuels (CCF) has announced a major partnership with Mercuria, a global energy and commodities trading group. The deal marks the first commercial agreement for CCF’s Triangle Unit Project near Gillette, Wyoming, where it produces Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) using a new carbon-negative method, reports The Malaysian Reserve.
Under the agreement, Mercuria will purchase the environmental benefits linked to Cowboy’s RNG production—called Environmental Attributes (EAs)—for the next 10 years. The deal includes 5 million MMBTU worth of EAs, which Mercuria will distribute through its international network of clients focused on reducing carbon emissions.
“This is a game-changer for our company,” said Cowboy Clean Fuels CEO Ryan Waddington. “Mercuria is a global leader in energy and environmental commodities, and we’re excited to work with them on this first-of-its-kind project.”
Founded in 2020, Cowboy Clean Fuels uses coal bed methane infrastructure in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin to convert agricultural waste into renewable methane and carbon dioxide. The process is designed to be carbon-negative, meaning it removes more carbon from the atmosphere than it emits. This makes it particularly valuable for industries that are difficult to decarbonize, such as heavy manufacturing, clean transport, and data centers.
Mercuria, which has been operating globally since 2004, specializes in supporting the shift to cleaner energy. The company praised Cowboy Clean Fuels for its innovative approach and long-term potential.
“When we found Cowboy, we immediately recognized their technology and growth potential,” said Harrison Clay, Head of Biogas at Mercuria. “We’re excited to be their go-to-market partner.”
Cowboy Clean Fuels is also developing more RNG projects in the region, aiming to become a key supplier of climate-friendly fuels as demand grows worldwide.
