Coastal biotech begins trial runs at Odisha ethanol plant, commercial production set for April 2025

Coastal Biotech Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Coastal Corporation Ltd, has begun trial runs at its ethanol plant in Maringi Village, Paralakhemundi, Odisha. The plant is expected to begin commercial production by the end of April 2025, the company informed the exchange.

The company has established a 100% subsidiary in Odisha dedicated to ethanol manufacturing, covering an area of 30 acres.

The government has been actively promoting ethanol blending in petrol through the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme, under which Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) sell ethanol-blended petrol.

As part of India’s commitment to achieving a 20% ethanol blending target by 2025, approximately 1,350 crore liters of ethanol are needed for blending and industrial purposes. To meet this target, the country’s production capacity needs to reach around 1,700 crore liters, assuming plants operate at 80% efficiency. Current data shows that by September 30, 2024, India has already achieved an ethanol production capacity of 1,648 crore liters, with several states reporting surplus capacities.
