Chinese e-commerce giant JD has launched a new electric vehicle in partnership with automaker GAC Group and battery producer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL). The vehicle, named the Aion UT Super, was introduced on Sunday and is available only through JD’s online platform, reports Chinadaily.com.
Marketed as a “national good car,” the Aion UT Super comes with two purchase options — a battery-leasing plan priced at 49,900 yuan ($7,007) and a full purchase option at 89,900 yuan.
While JD is not directly involved in the car’s manufacturing, the company will handle exclusive sales and gather consumer insights using data from millions of annual car-related searches to identify user preferences and demand trends.
GAC Group is responsible for the vehicle’s design, research and production, and CATL will provide the battery technology and support for the battery-swapping ecosystem.
