Taiwan-based China Airlines has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Morrison Express regarding Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This agreement, signed by Senior Vice President Eddy Liu of China Airlines and Corporate Vice President Vincent Kao of Morrison Express, marks the first collaboration between a Taiwanese airline and a corporate client on SAF usage. It also introduces a new business model for domestic industries. By sharing carbon reduction benefits, this partnership aims to decrease direct carbon emissions from air transport and reduce the overall carbon footprint of passenger and cargo transport. Additionally, it contributes to the airline industry’s sustainability efforts, helping achieve the Net Zero carbon emissions goal by 2050.
China Airlines has been a leader in SAF adoption, beginning with its use on ferry flights for new aircraft deliveries in 2017. The first Taiwanese passenger flight using SAF was operated in 2023. This year, China Airlines launched its SAF partnership program to include upstream and downstream vendors as well as customers, with the goal of creating a sustainable supply chain and advancing low-carbon transportation within Taiwan’s airline industry. Morrison Express, a major global freight forwarder headquartered in Taiwan, is the first company to join this program, supporting SAF use by China Airlines’ freighter fleet.
Morrison Express’s commitment to developing a corporate sustainability roadmap that offers green logistics solutions aligns with China Airlines’ ESG philosophy. SAF used in this new partnership results in 80% fewer carbon emissions compared to conventional fuel, which is expected to encourage more companies to participate and build a foundation for ESG sustainability.
China Airlines has long been dedicated to sustainability, implementing various eco-friendly initiatives in cargo operations. These include promoting e-Cargo services, using recycled poly-sheets for pallet stacking, computerizing apron operations to reduce paper use and loading errors, and employing electric tractors to cut waste and carbon emissions. The airline has previously won the Best Sustainable Innovation Cargo award during SkyTeam’s “The Sustainable Flight Challenge” and will continue to focus on optimizing carbon reduction targets to remain a leading sustainable enterprise in Taiwan.
