The Union government has approved the construction of a dedicated jetty at Paradip Port to handle green hydrogen, ammonia and other liquid cargo. The project, estimated to cost Rs 797.17 crore, will be developed by the Paradip Port Authority under a build-operate-transfer model, Alchem Pro reported.
The new facility will be able to handle 4 million tonnes of cargo each year. It will include a separate jetty, storage tanks, pipelines, cargo-handling equipment and other required infrastructure. The aim is to position the port as an important centre for green energy trade.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the decision reflects the government’s focus on building modern and environment-friendly infrastructure under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the country’s ports are being developed to support clean energy growth and sustainable trade.
The jetty will be built with a 279-metre distance between the outermost points and a water depth of 14.3 metres to allow safe movement of ships carrying liquid cargo.
During the construction phase, the Paradip Port Authority will contribute 20 per cent of the project cost, amounting to Rs 159.43 crore. The work is expected to be completed within two years.
Officials said the project will help improve export facilities and connect green hydrogen production centres in Odisha with global markets. They added that the development is in line with the National Green Hydrogen Mission and is expected to attract investment, generate employment and strengthen the region’s role in the clean energy sector.
The facility will also be equipped to handle other liquid cargo, ensuring efficient use of the infrastructure while the green hydrogen sector grows.
