The Union Cabinet, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the signing of a ‘Letter of Intent’ on Thursday, allowing India to join the ‘Energy Efficiency Hub.’
This initiative will see India become part of the International Energy Efficiency Hub, a global platform aimed at fostering collaboration and advancing energy efficiency on a worldwide scale. This decision underscores India’s dedication to sustainable development and its goals to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Founded in 2020 as a successor to the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC), which India was previously part of, the Hub brings together governments, international organizations, and private sector players to exchange knowledge, best practices, and innovative solutions.
Joining the Hub will provide India with access to a broad network of experts and resources, enhancing its domestic energy efficiency programs. As of July 2024, sixteen countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, have become members.
As a Hub member, India will engage in collaborative opportunities with other countries, sharing its expertise and learning from global best practices. This membership will also allow India to contribute to worldwide climate change efforts by promoting energy-efficient technologies and practices.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has been appointed as the implementing agency for India’s participation in the Hub. BEE will be instrumental in facilitating India’s involvement in the Hub’s initiatives and ensuring that these efforts align with the country’s national energy efficiency objectives.
India’s entry into the Hub marks a crucial move toward a more sustainable future, accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy and enhancing energy security.
