BPCL and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India form joint venture to develop renewable energy and green hydrogen projects

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has announced a 50:50 joint venture with Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries, to develop renewable energy and green hydrogen projects across India, reports Business Standard.

The partnership is designed to support India’s ongoing energy transition and sustainable development goals. The new venture will focus on the production, operation, and sale of renewable energy and green hydrogen, along with related derivatives.

According to a joint statement, the JV will also explore opportunities in green ammonia production, green fuel bunkering, reducing emissions in port operations, and other emerging green fuel technologies. The collaboration aims to combine Sembcorp’s extensive experience in renewables with BPCL’s strong presence in the petroleum sector and infrastructure capabilities.

Sembcorp, which currently operates 6 GW of renewable energy assets in India, is positioning itself to lead in green hydrogen and ammonia production as part of global decarbonization efforts. The company says its assets will enable large-scale, cost-effective green hydrogen generation.

Commenting on the partnership, BPCL Chairman and Managing Director G. Krishnakumar said, “This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a sustainable tomorrow. By pooling our expertise and resources, we aim to develop innovative and best-in-class renewable energy and green hydrogen solutions to support India’s climate goals.”

Krishnakumar added that BPCL is committed to expanding its renewable energy portfolio to 10 GW and achieving net-zero emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by 2040, aligning with the company’s goal of becoming a Net Zero Energy Company.
