Bokaro Steel plant to pilot hydrogen injection to cut emissions

Bokaro: Bokaro Steel Plant has signed an agreement with Forbes Marshall Private Limited to introduce hydrogen gas injection technology in its blast furnace-1, marking a step towards cleaner steel production.

Officials said the project will be implemented under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. With this, Bokaro will become the first plant under Steel Authority of India Limited to launch a pilot using hydrogen in its operations.

The new system will use hydrogen as a cleaner alternative to partially replace coal and other carbon-intensive fuels traditionally used in steelmaking. This is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve environmental performance.

The move is in line with India’s broader climate commitments announced by Narendra Modi at the COP26, where the country set a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Officials said the initiative could help lower the carbon footprint of the steel sector while strengthening the global competitiveness of India’s steel industry. The adoption of hydrogen-based technology is being seen as a key step towards building a cleaner and more sustainable industrial system.
