Biorig, the renewable gases division of Spanish energy group Solarig, has announced a significant expansion of its biomethane operations in Italy. The company plans to invest more than €300 million by 2030 to develop and operate over 20 biomethane production plants across the country. These facilities are expected to produce around 1 terawatt-hour (TWh) of energy annually—equivalent to 90 million cubic metres of biomethane—enough to supply approximately 360,000 Italian households each year, according to the press release.
With a 15-year track record in Italy, Solarig is reaffirming its commitment to the country’s clean energy transition. The move also reflects the company’s strategic shift toward a broader renewable energy portfolio that now includes renewable gases alongside solar power.
This marks Biorig’s first international expansion as the company positions itself as a key player in Europe’s biomethane sector. Alongside the new Italian projects, Biorig is already developing over 20 initiatives in Spain, expected to generate about 3 TWh of renewable energy per year.
Strategic Market and Regulatory Support
“Italy offers a compelling opportunity thanks to its strong regulatory support for biomethane, robust organic waste management systems, and clear recognition of the agronomic benefits of biofertilisers,” said Biorig Managing Director Manuel Alonso. “These conditions provide a solid base for us to apply our proven model, tailored to fit the Italian context.”
Agnese Rocco, Solarig’s Country Manager in Italy, added: “Biomethane plays a critical role in decarbonising sectors that cannot easily transition to electrification. This investment aligns with Solarig’s 2025–2028 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes diversification as a response to the challenges of the energy transition.”
Growth Through Partnerships and Local Integration
Biorig’s expansion strategy includes both the development of new facilities and the integration of mature projects led by local developers. The company aims to collaborate with partners who share its technical and environmental standards, ensuring that all initiatives align with national sustainability and regulatory goals.
“Our ambition is to become one of Europe’s leading biomethane producers, and to establish this business as a core part of Solarig’s future,” Alonso said. “Italy plays a central role in that strategy. With our experience in developing energy infrastructure both internationally and within Italy, we are well-positioned to contribute to the growth of a sector that is showing significant promise and maturity.”
