Biomass production is essential for energy transition plan for India: R. Mukundan

R. Mukundan, Vice President of CII and MD & CEO of Tata Chemicals, stressed the importance of using different energy sources based on what each sector needs. “We need a clear plan for every industry to follow, with steps laid out up to 2045,” he said. He also pointed out that while solar and wind power are important, relying only on them is not enough. Mukundan underlined the need to develop energy storage, support domestic manufacturing, and invest in technologies like small modular nuclear reactors. He also welcomed the government’s efforts to address concerns related to nuclear energy safety, reports India Chemical News.

He was speaking during a session titled “Geopolitics of Energy Transition: India’s Strategic Imperative”, at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Annual Business Summit 2025.

He said that biomass—an energy source made from plant and animal waste—could play a much bigger role, especially in sectors like aviation, where cleaner fuel options are still limited.

Dr. Ranjit Rath, Chairman and Managing Director of Oil India, spoke about the company’s increased efforts in exploring new natural gas sources. He said natural gas can help India switch to cleaner energy and highlighted the achievement of full coverage under the City Gas Distribution program. “We’re looking to work with more partners and find new gas-producing areas,” he added.

K.V. Sajay, CEO of Zelestra India, said that long-term government support is key to attracting reliable investors in renewable energy.

Deepak Thakur, CEO of Mahindra Susten, said India’s energy strategy must address both energy needs and environmental concerns. “India’s energy use is growing faster than most countries, so we need a strong and practical plan,” he said. Thakur emphasized the importance of having a steady supply of equipment, local innovation, and spreading investments across different types of energy. He also said lithium-based batteries will become important for storing renewable energy over the next few years and called for better coordination with the national electricity grid and clearer rules for companies.

Dr. Ajay Mathur, former Director General of the International Solar Alliance, guided the panel through a conversation on the importance of securing access to key raw materials and preparing for supply chain risks, while also keeping up with new technology developments.

All panelists agreed that India needs a balanced energy plan that supports economic growth, encourages new technology, and protects the environment.

The high-level discussion took place at the Taj Palace, New Delhi, as part of the CII Annual Business Summit 2025 under the theme “Building Trust”. The event reaffirmed CII’s goal of helping shape a strong and sustainable industrial future for the country.
