Bayer acquires camelina assets from Smart Earth Camelina Corp. to advance biofuels

Bayer has reached an agreement with Canada-based Smart Earth Camelina Corp. to acquire its camelina germplasm, intellectual property, and other materials. The acquisition aims to strengthen Bayer’s efforts to support renewable fuel production and promote sustainable farming practices.

Camelina is considered one of the lowest environmental impacts oilseed crops. It may potentially produce renewable diesel and SAF, which represent a cleaner replacement for fossil-based fuels. Due to the estimated growing demand over time, an expected growth of 40 billion gallons between 14 billion gallons in current volumes and projected up to 2040 might occur.

Frank Terhorst, Head of Strategy and Sustainability at Bayer’s Crop Science Division, emphasized the need to assist farmers in fulfilling this demand. “We are focused on creating new opportunities for farmers to grow crops like camelina, which can play a major role in reducing carbon emissions and advancing sustainable agriculture,” he said.

Biofuels, made from renewable resources such as corn, soy, and alternative crops like camelina, are considered essential in cutting emissions from transportation sectors where electrification is challenging, such as aviation and shipping. Camelina, in particular, offers benefits for farmers due to its short growing season, drought tolerance, and suitability for less fertile land or as a rotation crop.

“This acquisition allows us to offer farmers an alternative crop that is both profitable and environmentally friendly,” said Jennifer Ozimkiewicz, Head of Crop Strategy Soy and Biofuels at Bayer.

Jack Grushcow, President and CEO of Smart Earth Camelina Corp., expressed optimism about Bayer’s ability to scale camelina production. “Bayer has the resources and expertise to make Camelina a significant player in the global effort to reduce CO2 emissions and advance sustainable farming,” he said.

This acquisition underscores Bayer’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable agricultural practices, positioning the company as a leader in developing clean fuel solutions for the future.
