Global industrial software leader AVEVA has joined forces with Protium, the UK’s largest green hydrogen developer, in a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating innovation in green hydrogen production. The collaboration is centered around AVEVA’s advanced digital tools, which now power Protium’s newly launched digital industrial intelligence platform, reports Chemanalyst.News.
This platform is designed to speed up project development and boost operational efficiency, playing a key role in delivering cleaner hydrogen energy. Since implementing AVEVA’s solutions, Protium has already reported major improvements in performance — including a 30% reduction in time spent on process simulation, a 15% boost in system reliability, and a 15% drop in projected maintenance costs.
The company also expects to save around 256,000 tons of carbon emissions each year, with AVEVA’s digital technologies contributing an additional 5–10% in CO₂ savings through smarter design and better utility management.
Caspar Herzberg, CEO of AVEVA, called the partnership a key step in using technology to support cleaner industry. “This collaboration demonstrates our commitment to sustainable innovation. We’ve developed a smart, cost-efficient data platform that helps Protium fully leverage its green hydrogen capabilities,” he said.
Jon Constable, Chief Operating Officer of Protium, emphasized how essential digital tools are to scaling up hydrogen production. “Green hydrogen is central to the UK’s goal of cutting carbon emissions by a million tonnes per year by 2030. To meet that goal, we need the right digital infrastructure. Our partnership with AVEVA gives us the capabilities to grow our operations, just as we prepare to launch our second hydrogen facility,” he said.
Protium covers the entire lifecycle of hydrogen projects — from planning and financing to ownership and operation — across multiple sectors. Its new digital platform, built on AVEVA’s technology, includes a digital twin that collects and analyzes real-time data from equipment and operations. This enables early fault detection, predictive maintenance, and improved performance tracking throughout the value chain.
The integration of AVEVA’s tools is helping Protium improve energy efficiency, monitor operations more effectively, and certify the origin of renewable power used in its facilities. It is also expected to reduce equipment downtime and increase reliability across hydrogen plants.
The partnership marks a significant advancement in using digital technology to scale green hydrogen production—an essential component in the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
