Alder Renewables and Bioenergie AE Cote-Nord partner to produce sustainable aviation fuel in Quebec

Two renewable energy companies, Alder Renewables and Bioenergie AE Cote-Nord, have joined forces to produce cleaner jet fuel from forest waste in Port-Cartier, Quebec. The project, called Project Avance, aims to start production in 2027 and is being billed as one of the first efforts in North America to make jet fuel from wood by-products, reports Renewables Now.

The plan involves using Alder Renewables’ technology to upgrade bio-oil already produced at the existing Port-Cartier plant, a facility owned by Arbec Forest Products and Groupe Remabec. The plant will be adapted to make a cleaner form of crude oil, known as Alder Renewable Crude (ARC), which will then be refined into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other low-carbon fuels for transport.

Project Avance is part of a larger effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions from air travel. According to Alder Renewables, using forest waste in this way could reduce emissions by as much as 80% compared to regular jet fuel.

The companies behind the project are asking for additional support from both the Canadian federal and Quebec provincial governments. They also hope to turn the site into a hub for research and testing of other renewable fuel technologies.

This initiative supports Canada’s Aviation Action Plan, which aims to produce 1 billion litres of sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.
