Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is finding a productive use for the waste generated by the stray cattle housed in its shelters. According to a press release issued today, the civic body repurposes approximately 2,000 kilograms of dung and green waste collected daily from its facilities in Danilimda and Bakrol, reports Desh Gujarat.
To manage the issue of stray cattle, the AMC relocates animals it captures to Karuna Temples in Danilimda and Bakrol under the Stray Animal Prevention and Control Policy–2023. These shelters provide the animals with food, water, medical care, supervision, and general upkeep.
This care results in the daily generation of over 2,500 kilograms of dung and green waste. Following the principles of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Resource, and Repurpose” and the “Circular Economy” model highlighted in the 2024–25 Budget, the AMC repurposes around 2,000 kilograms of this manure each day.
The collected waste is transported to the garden department’s site in Gyaspur. There, it undergoes processing to become fertilizer, which is then utilized across the city’s 62 municipal gardens. This recycled fertilizer also supports the cultivation of seedlings, nursery operations, and soil improvement initiatives. Furthermore, cow dung and dry grass are used to produce eco-friendly sticks and compost. These are distributed for traditional Vedic Holi celebrations and for use in funeral rites at city crematoriums.
In 2025, the AMC distributed these dung-based sticks at 57 locations across seven zones, enabling residents to celebrate a more sustainable Vedic Holi.
