Maruti Suzuki launches training to handle high voltage systems for electric vehicles

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has introduced a specialised training module aimed at equipping future technicians with the skills needed to work on high-voltage systems in electric and hybrid vehicles. The program will be rolled out across 130 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in 24 states and four Union Territories.

According to a company release, the first batch of over 4,100 students trained under this program will be ready to enter the automotive workforce by September 2025.

The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s goal of achieving carbon net-zero emissions and is expected to contribute to the faster adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across the country.

“This training program is designed to prepare upcoming automotive technicians to safely and effectively handle high-voltage electric systems, which are becoming increasingly common in the vehicle market,” the company said.

Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, said one of the key barriers to EV adoption identified during market research was customer concern about after-sales support.

“To address this, we’re aiming to extend service coverage far beyond the current EV hubs,” Bharti explained. “While 90% of EV sales currently take place in about 100 cities, we are expanding to cover 1,000 cities with over 1,500 workshops capable of servicing battery electric vehicles (BEVs).”

The company clarified that students who complete the course are not bound to join Maruti Suzuki and are free to work with other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as well. The training, which also covers strong hybrid vehicles, is considered a strategic move to support the broader adoption of clean technologies in the automotive sector.

Targeted at second-year ITI students, the curriculum includes key modules on the fundamentals of electric and hybrid vehicles, safety protocols for handling high-voltage systems, the use of specialised tools and equipment, and maintenance best practices.

Maruti Suzuki is also investing in training the faculty at these ITIs through “train-the-trainer” sessions and supplying equipment needed to effectively run the program. These efforts, the company believes, will help build customer confidence in new energy vehicle technologies and create a robust service ecosystem for the future.
