Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has praised BRICS as a “cohesive force within the Global South,” calling it a promising platform for strengthening cooperation among emerging economies. Speaking in an interview with TV BRICS, Anwar described the bloc as a transformative initiative that could reshape global governance and amplify the voice of developing nations.
As Malaysia prepares to take over the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, Anwar reaffirmed the country’s commitment to deepening ASEAN’s role in both regional and global affairs. He emphasised the need to revitalise key forums such as ASEAN+3 and the East Asia Summit, describing them as “neutral and constructive spaces” for dialogue, cooperation, and conflict resolution amid growing geopolitical tensions.
The Prime Minister underscored Malaysia’s focus on inclusive and sustainable development across ASEAN, stressing that no member state should be left behind. “We must ensure inclusivity and sustainability in ASEAN’s development,” he said, pointing to equitable growth and regional unity as key goals.
On environmental issues, Anwar reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to leading the green agenda within ASEAN. He highlighted climate action and sustainable development as top priorities, noting Malaysia’s intention to drive cooperation on environmental initiatives across member states to foster a more resilient region.
Discussing Malaysia’s intention to join BRICS, Anwar said the group represents more than just an economic alliance. “BRICS is a transformative platform that can foster solidarity among emerging economies,” he said, positioning the bloc as essential to the evolving role of the Global South in shaping international dialogue.
Looking ahead to Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship, Anwar stated that the country will focus on promoting peace, stability, and inclusivity while expanding the bloc’s partnerships globally. “Our goal is to strengthen ASEAN’s role as a driver of regional cooperation and a bridge to the wider world,” he said.
Malaysia’s forward-leaning approach to sustainability, inclusivity, and regional collaboration reflects its broader vision for a fairer and more balanced international order.
