State govt encouraging green industry: Himachal CM Sukhvinder Sukhu

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, while addressing the All India Motor Transport Congress’ ‘National Truck and Bus Meet’ at Gandhi Gram in the Kasauli Assembly Constituency, Solan District, emphasized the state’s position as one of India’s most sought-after tourist destinations. He credited the region’s pristine natural beauty for attracting visitors from across the globe, according to an official statement.

The Chief Minister noted that while tourism brings economic benefits, the growing influx of visitors also places pressure on the state’s fragile environment. To address this, the government is prioritizing the development of sustainable tourism infrastructure with a strong focus on environmental conservation.

As part of its broader green vision, the state has set a goal to become a green energy state by March 2026. This includes promoting the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and expanding related infrastructure. CM Sukhu expressed his satisfaction that the transport congress is aligned with Himachal’s sustainable development goals and is helping shape future strategies for environmental protection.

Highlighting the environmental risks posed by greenhouse gas emissions, particularly from the transport sector—responsible for 16–20% of such emissions—he said the increasing number of petrol and diesel vehicles in the state is a major concern. To combat this, the government is actively promoting e-vehicles, a move that not only curbs air pollution but also helps conserve natural resources.

One key initiative is the ₹680 crore Rajiv Gandhi Swarojgar Start-up Yojana, which offers a 50% subsidy to youth for purchasing e-taxis. These e-taxis are being integrated into various government departments and institutions. So far, 50 e-taxis have been deployed, and another 50 will be added before May 10. The Chief Minister, who personally uses an e-vehicle, stated that it is both cost-effective and sustainable. This year, the state plans to convert 3,000 petrol and diesel vehicles into EVs.

To further promote green public transport, diesel buses are being phased out in favor of e-buses. Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has issued tenders for 297 electric buses at a cost of ₹412 crore. Charging stations worth ₹124 crore are being set up at bus depots. Additionally, 500 more e-buses are planned for procurement in the 2025–26 fiscal year.

Six green corridors have already been established, with 41 more charging stations to be installed along these routes. The state government is also offering full exemption on road tax and a 50% concession on special road tax for registering e-commercial vehicles. Traditional auto-rickshaws are being replaced with e-rickshaws as part of the environmental initiative.

To create employment and encourage private participation, the government will issue permits for 1,000 new bus routes. Private operators will receive subsidies of up to 40% for deploying e-buses or electric tempo travellers. Efforts are underway to transition the entire public transport sector to electric vehicles in the near future.

In a pilot phase, all government offices in Hamirpur district will begin using e-vehicles. The Chief Minister also emphasized the state’s commitment to promoting green industries and tourism, calling it an opportune time for investment in Himachal Pradesh.
