ABB India’s Nelamangala Campus advances on Sustainability Goals with reduced emissions and water positivity

ABB India’s facility in Nelamangala, Bengaluru, has officially reached ‘Mission to Zero™’ status, marking a significant milestone in its sustainability journey. The site now operates entirely on renewable electricity under the RE100 commitment and has implemented advanced digital technologies to enhance energy efficiency on-site. As a result, the campus has cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by an impressive 92%.

In addition to reducing emissions, the Nelamangala site has also excelled in waste and water management. It diverts over 99% of its waste from landfills and recycles 88% of its water, positioning itself as a leader in circular and low-carbon operations.

The facility, which provides electrification, motion, robotics, and automation solutions for a wide range of industries, is ABB’s second site in India to earn the Mission to Zero™ designation. This initiative is part of ABB’s global drive toward decarbonizing its operations and achieving net-zero emissions across its facilities worldwide.

Saju SR, Senior Vice President of ABB Electrification’s Smart Power Division, emphasized the strategic importance of this achievement. “Transforming our Nelamangala campus reflects ABB’s broader commitment to sustainability and supports India’s vision of greener manufacturing. Our local team has led the way with innovative measures to cut emissions and manage resources more responsibly,” he said. He also highlighted efforts in addressing regional water stress, noting the site’s focus on rainwater harvesting and water recycling, which has helped raise local groundwater levels by more than 30 meters.

Since early 2022, the Nelamangala campus has operated entirely on renewable electricity through a solar Power Purchase Agreement with third-party providers, enabling a 92% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2019 levels. Enhanced energy efficiency has been achieved through ABB’s own suite of digital tools that monitor and optimize power usage.

The commitment to sustainability extends beyond technology. Employees at the site actively participate in energy audits, emissions tracking, and innovative waste reduction projects. These include refining packaging methods and incorporating recyclable materials to reduce environmental impact.

Nelamangala also became ABB’s first water-positive facility in 2021 by adopting a comprehensive 6R strategy—rainwater harvesting, reuse, reduction, recycling, real-time monitoring, and result assurance. The site now returns more freshwater to the environment than it consumes, with on-site systems recycling 88% of used water and rainwater harvesting significantly reducing surface runoff.

This achievement marks another step forward in ABB’s global sustainability goals, showcasing how innovation and collaboration at the local level can contribute to a more sustainable future.
