Vietjet becomes first airline to operate flights with Sustainable Aviation Fuel

VietJet, Vietnam’s modern airline, has become the first in the country to operate flights using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in collaboration with Petrolimex Aviation. The airline successfully completed two SAF-powered flights: one to Melbourne, Australia, and another to Seoul, South Korea. These inaugural flights represent a significant milestone for both VietJet and the Vietnamese aviation industry in their pursuit of environmentally sustainable practices.

Sustainable aviation fuel, made from renewable resources like used cooking oil, agricultural waste, and municipal waste, can cut carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil fuels. SAF meets rigorous international aviation standards and is safely utilized in commercial flight operations. This achievement highlights VietJet’s leadership in promoting eco-friendly air travel and encouraging sustainable growth within the aviation sector.

Dinh Viet Phuong, CEO of VietJet, stressed the significance of these SAF-powered flights, describing them as a symbol of environmentally responsible air travel. He underlined the airline’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering a more sustainable future for aviation. VietJet is collaborating with international organizations to further develop and supply SAF, aligning with Vietnam’s commitment made at COP26 to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

This milestone is part of VietJet’s broader sustainability strategy, which has been in place for over a decade. The airline has implemented various initiatives to minimize its environmental footprint, such as adopting electronic ticketing, using recyclable materials onboard, and launching fuel-saving programs. VietJet remains dedicated to environmental protection, as shown by its detailed ESG sustainability report and its ongoing efforts to support Vietnam’s green growth strategy and emission reduction goals.
