Jamaica seeks stronger ties with India in energy

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has conveyed his country’s eagerness to enhance collaboration with India across various sectors, including science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), education, digitalisation, security, and energy.

“India positions itself as the knowledge capital of the world. We acknowledge the significant progress your government has made in STEM education and digitalisation, and we look forward to learning from India as a leader in technological advancement,” Holness stated.

He also emphasized Jamaica’s interest in adopting India’s technology-driven security solutions to bolster national and border security. “In line with my administration’s efforts to improve the safety of our citizens by strengthening our national security infrastructure, we view India—a global leader in security technology—as a natural ally,” he explained.

On the topic of energy security, Holness remarked that Jamaica aligns with India’s objective to diversify its energy sources by 2030. “Our shared goals regarding energy diversification by 2030 provide a solid foundation for deeper cooperation in this area,” he added.

To further enhance this partnership, Holness announced Jamaica’s intention to join the Global Biofuels Alliance, initiated by the Indian government. “I am pleased to declare Jamaica’s plan to join the Global Biofuels Alliance,” he stated.

He also noted Jamaica’s vulnerability to climate change and emphasized the importance of supporting efforts to address this critical issue. “Jamaica is proud to have been invited by Prime Minister Modi to be a founding member of the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI),” he added.

The Jamaican Prime Minister is on an official visit to India from September 30 to October 3. This marks his first visit to India, as well as the inaugural bilateral visit by a Jamaican Prime Minister.

Earlier in the day, Holness met with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, where they held a bilateral meeting followed by discussions at the delegation level. The ties between India and Jamaica are rooted in a shared historical and cultural background, reflected in their common colonial history, democratic values, and love for cricket.
