More than 40 environmental groups urge UK Energy Secretary to put an end to financial support for biomass-burning companies

Over 40 environmental groups have called on UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband to end financial support for biomass-burning companies, including Drax, which operates Britain’s largest power station in North Yorkshire, reported Bioenergy Insight.

As per media report, an open letter, signed by organizations from wood pellet-exporting countries such as the US, Canada, Portugal, Estonia, and Latvia, urges this action. The letter highlights that Drax and Lynemouth in Northumberland receive government subsidies and carbon tax breaks.

The campaigners argue that these power stations are burning wood from some of the world’s most biodiverse forests, causing severe harm to communities, wildlife, and the climate.

“We urge you not to grant any new subsidies to wood-burning power stations in the UK,” the letter states.

This appeal comes as the current biomass subsidy system is set to expire in 2027. Drax has defended its practices, asserting that its biomass is sustainably and legally sourced.
