SkyNRG secures financial close for 100,000-tonne SAF project in Netherlands

SkyNRG has achieved financial close for a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project in the
Netherlands, marking the end of a seven-year development phase and allowing construction to begin. The facility is planned to produce 100,000 tonnes of fuel each year, Renewables Now reported.

The project has secured backing from international investors, commercial lenders and advisers, though financial details were not disclosed.

Debt funding was arranged through a consortium of banks, including ABN AMRO Bank NV, BNP Paribas, Cooperatieve Rabobank UA, Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, Deutsche Bank AG, ING Bank NV, Mizuho Bank Ltd, Natixis, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Société Générale, Standard Chartered Bank and UniCredit Bank Austria AG.

Known as DSL-01, the project is described as the first commercial-scale SAF plant to secure non-recourse project financing. Funding has brought together existing and new shareholders such as KLM, Macquarie Group, APG and other minority investors.

The plant will be built at the Delfzijl chemical park, supporting sustainability plans set by Groningen Seaports and the Province of Groningen. All required permits have been approved, and agreements related to the project and financing are in place. Technip Energies has been appointed to handle engineering, procurement and construction work.

The facility will use the hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids pathway supported by technology from Topsoe. Along with aviation fuel, it is expected to produce about 35,000 tonnes of by-products, including bio-based propane, butane and naphtha.

SkyNRG said lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from the fuel produced at DSL-01 are projected to decline from roughly 80% to more than 90% over time, helped by greater availability of renewable energy in the country and reduced dependence on natural gas.
